What is a Mini Session?  l  Preston Lifestyle Family Photographer

The Mini Session...

I wanted to explain a little bit about what a mini photography session is all about, a lot of photographers now offer mini sessions at various times of the year, usually for seasonal events like Christmas and autumn leaves but what does it actually involve and how is it different to a regular family photoshoot?

What kind of a photoshoot is it?

A mini session is just that, a mini version of a regular session, usually 10-30 minutes, although you should still get a variety of photographs a lot less images are taken during a mini session so there is less choice when you are selecting your photos.

Often families are unable to change outfits which they may have time to do during a standard photography session and there will be less options for backgrounds/locations which is something to think about if you feel that you would want a variety. The photographer will most likely have a number of sessions back to back over a morning/day, so time is very limited if you are late/need to change etc. I always build in a little wriggle room just in case a child has struggled with the session or needed a little break/snack.

Why have a mini session rather than a standard photoshoot?

One of the benefits of a mini family photoshoot is that it can give you a taster of what a regular photography session would be like with your chosen photographer without committing to the higher cost. To get the best experience out of your session it is essential that you have a good connection with your photographer and that they help you to feel relaxed especially if you're feeling a little anxious about having your photos taken, which, lets face it, most people are!

A great benefit of a shorter session is that children generally only have a short amount of time where they are happy to be involved in family photos, an experienced photographer will know this and ensure those first minutes are spent capturing the 'essential' shots for the family, then toddlers can have a little break if needed.

The cost of the session can be a huge benefit to families, being able to have family photos with just a small outlay means that professional photographs can be updated on a regular basis. When I had a studio I had a large client base that came to me for Christmas mini sessions year after year, it was so lovely to see the children grow and all of the new additions to their family.

What about location mini sessions?

I now only do photoshoots on location, we have some stunning country parks here in Lancashire and I often shoot at Cuerden Valley, Worden park in Leyland and Astley Park in Chorley. Country parks are perfect for family photography so when I'm selecting locations for mini sessions I will chose somewhere that has a couple of backgrounds that are close together, usually with very minimal walking involved, in fact you may only need to turn around. In a 20-30 minute session you don't want to spend 10-15 minutes walking from one location to another.

What about dogs at outdoor mini photoshoots?

To me your dogs are part of your family so I'd encourage you to bring them along.

When a standard photoshoot is more appropriate...

Mini sessions don't work for all family photoshoots, if you are a large family (6+) hoping for individual and multiple group shots, possibly multi generational then the time will probably not allow for your needs, a standard session would be better for you and allow you time to have the variety you require, however, we can discuss this and decide what would work best for you.

How to find out about upcoming mini sessions...

Most photographers advertise their mini sessions well in advance as they often sell out quickly, the best place to look is on their Facebook or Insta pages, some photographers may have an email list that you can be added to so that they can let you know about upcoming photoshoots and offers ahead of their release on social media. You can find my FB page here I always release my mini sessions to my Facebook group a day or so before they go on to my page, you can join my photography group here

Outdoor family photoshoots are a really fun experience that are enjoyed by all the family, do some research and get booked with your favourite photographer, you wont regret it!
