What's it all about?
If you're approaching baby's 1st, or even 2nd, birthday you may be thinking about having some professional photographs taken to mark this huge milestone, it's a great time to update your images and they make fabulous thank you cards and gifts for friends and family. Not so long ago there were simply child portrait sessions and it was just a case of choosing the photographer whose style was right for you, then, the cake smash arrived from the USA and that changed everything!
I was one of the first in the area to start to offer cake smash sessions over 4 years ago now and literally no one knew what they were all about.
It's thought that the cake would encourage a little one to sit still for short periods whilst the photographer captured a range of images while the baby smashed the cake and for the post part this is the case. If you've ever tried to take photos of your crawling/walking 1 year old you probably know it can be a tricky age, as soon as you get them to look at you and you've got your camera/phone ready, they've gone!
And what about the cake? surely they shouldn't be eating so much cake at such young age? well to be honest....they don't eat much cake at all, they tend to have little tastes, most families are able to take their cake home and enjoy a slice with a cup of tea. Although some cakes are well and truely smashed!
Cakes are included in all of my packages and come from the fabulous Vicki at Smashing Cakes, 5* hygiene rated and able to cater for a range of allergies/intolerances.
Sessions start with a mini portrait session in an outfit that you've brought with you, this only takes about 10 minutes, babies start getting a little restless if it goes on too long.
Once we've done that baby changes in to their cake smash outfit, I have a good variety but some parents do bring their own, we go through colours/themes/outfits a week or so before the session so that I can ensure I have everything I need, earlier sometimes and then in comes the cake. We put baby down and off they go!
Some babies really go for it from the start whilst others are a little hesitant to start with, it is totally normal for them to take a little time to realise that they can touch/eat/bash the cake and I do have some ways to encourage them. Whilst your baby is busy enjoying their cake I am busy taking plenty of images of your little one, including their messy toes, fingers and faces. The session is very baby led and most babies enjoy a little cuddle part way through, ensuring the parent is also covered in cake!
After the cake comes the splash, a little tin tub (I have a few to choose from) and a few bubbles make for fabulous photographs. This is probably my favourite part of the session, little ones love to have a good splash.
We end the session with a quick shot of them wrapped up in a cosy towel/dressing gown which is so sweet.
Your gallery will be ready to view within 2 weeks of your session, often much sooner depending on time of year, you select your images on line, there are usually upwards of 50 images to choose from and then if you have products included in your package they will be prepared/ordered.
If you'd like a copy of my cake smash guide, would like to check availability or have any questions you can contact me here or through my Facebook page. Saturday sessions fill up quickly but I still have a few available in the coming months.
My packages are here and can be customised to suit your needs/budget

"What a really wonderful experience for our little boy. He had the cake smash and tub time for his first birthday, we got so many wonderful photos, and the shoot itself was so much fun, he loved it. I would recommend Ollie and George photography to everyone" (Milly K)
